Trust in your Managed Services but always use an SLA

I have recently noticed a somewhat troubling trend in the Managed Service Provider community. Purveyors who have been a trusted source for valuable information have started bringing up a stance on service level agreements that goes against everything that I have ever been taught and, more importantly, everything that I have ever learned in the field as a business owner.

I see a disparity developing between organizations that offer Break / Fix services to prospective clients, not so much as a definitive business model, but a method to fulfill the specific needs of a particular client and move them up the ladder of managed service levels and so-called "MSP only" shops that seem to scoff at providers offering the Break / Fix model and businesses that it may be the best fit for.

There are several things every Managed Service Provider needs to start out and succeed. Sometimes it is hard to wade through all of the chatter in the industry about the latest and greatest "must have" service or technology. Focusing on the core requirements and building a strong service offering upon those is an easy to measure, calculated approach that has brought us success. When combined with an elite Service Level and a dedicated, client first, marketing perspective, it is very easy to step up from a Break / Fix, VAR, or Remote Support model.

MSPmentor 501: Social Media Analysis

"The MSPmentor 501 is an annual report from MSPmentor and publisher, Nine Lives Media. Previously known as the MSPmentor 100 report, this year’s report has been expanded from 100 to 501 companies worldwide..."

When the 2013 MSPmentor 501 list was released, all we saw was one thing: social media. You know in cartoons when a really hungry character starts seeing everything as food (a.k.a. meat-o-vision)?

It was kind of like that. As a company that frequently interacts with managed service providers via blog posts, Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, and Pinterest, as well as being an MSP ourselves, we're always interested in what platforms companies have a presence on. Just Facebook? Twitter and a blog? All of the above, plus YouTube? Where else can we interact with them?

The MSPmentor 501 held all the answers to our burning social media questions! We couldn't wait to get our hands on that data and start analyzing. First things first, we made a master chart of the top 100 companies and all of their social media listed in the published report. (We know, we know. They expanded the list to 501 only to have us chop it back down to 100, but the number 501 overwhelmed us a little...) Then, we got down to business. Here's what we found...

The Best SEO Blogs for DIY

As a small managed service provider ourselves, we understand firsthand the lack of time and funds that most MSPs are working with when it comes to search engine optimization. Finding, hiring, and communicating with an SEO firm is no small feat or cost, which is why we have chosen the DIY approach to optimizing our website.

A HUGE help in this endeavor has been blogs by SEO companies, websites, and people in the industry. We've compiled a Listly of our favorites that have been instrumental in our SEO education. We keep coming back to these blogs to stay current and see what else we can do to improve our site (There is always something!).

Subscribe, subscribe, subscribe

We can't mention these blogs without mentioning the tool that helps us read, search, and organize our subscriptions - Google Reader. Subscribing through any feed reader will do, but Google Reader is definitely our preference. It's easy to search all our SEO blog subscriptions, or just one particular blog, for a specific how-to or topic you want to know more about (i.e. sitemaps). With Google Reader you can also favorite a post, easily see which blogs have been recently updated, etc.

EDIT: Google Reader will no longer be available after July 1, 2013. The best alternative is Feedly, which is offering Google Reader users a seamless transition.

Not just SEO...

You don't learn about only SEO from these blogs. We've learned about company culture, management, growth, customer service, and many other aspects of a business from these blogs. For example, all of the people on this list are entrepreneurs in their own right - some of them manage large startups (Rand, Wil), some are striking out on their own (Ross). There is much more to be gathered from our recommended reading than just a few tips on search engine optimization.

Happy 2013! We're very excited to tell you about the changes happening at MSP Builder, but first we'd like to thank all of our MSPs, followers, subscribers, circles, groups, and friends. Since our launch in May 2012, we've had the pleasure of meeting (virtually and in "real life") so many great people and companies within the MSP community.
